Barrier Breaker of the Month of October 2021
Our Barrier breaker of the month of October 2021 is…
Rilwan Jarboh aka Blackmax a young Gambian YouTuber with over 30 thousand subscribers. He creates educating and entertaining content on the internet. From interviews to reaction videos, etc.
What motivated you to start a YouTube channel
It started off as fun but along the way I realized people loved what I was doing so I took it seriously. This is why I tell young people to be focused and do whatever they are doing well. You may never know what will come out of it, it might be your catalyst to success.
Saul – That’s really amazing Rilwan. This is why I believe it’s important not to over think things and just start. If it’s something you really want to do, just start.
- As a content creator, what are some of the Challenges you face:
One of the biggest challenges I faced as a content creator in The Gambia is power shortage and slow internet connection. These two are very vital to create and post consistently. Imagine I wake one morning, and my PC battery is low and there’s no light, which means I will have to wait for hours and this will delay my work. If I cannot post a video due to slow internet connection that’s a problem because my subscribers need to watch fresh content and I can’t keep them waiting. In general there’s a lot of improvement needed especially in these two areas.
- What advice can you give to a young person who feels like life is hard and doesn’t know what to do?
Listen, life is hard and that’s the hard fact. However, with much focus and determination you can attain any height. Life in itself is a gift, being alive and having the ability to move around is one step towards achieving something great. As healthy as you are, get up and keep moving. Whatever you find yourself doing and it adds value to people’s lives, just keep at it.
Saul – Just to add to what you’ve said Rilwan, I believe it’s also good as young people we know our passion. You can have more than one passion, pursue different things and see what works for you.
- What are the lessons that you are learning about yourself and life in general
Guys, slow down! I know it’s super fast out there but learn to slow down and have patience. Also cultivate the attitude of listening. Listen to those around you, they may not always have the right answers but they see things/traits in you that you may or may not see. These two things are what I am learning and will continue to learn.
Saul – Yes, having patience and listening are good skills everyone should have. Also, listen to understand, that’s the most important. Don’t just listen to answer.
- What do you know now that you wish you had known when you’re younger?
Well, I’m still young and I have a lot to learn but I value learning. Having the desire to learn something new every day is something that is important to me. As I mentioned earlier, listening is also vital.
- How did you reach this number of subscribers?
Dedication. I dedicate time and energy to brainstorm new ideas. I don’t copy what other youtubers are doing. I want my viewers to be fully entertained and educated so I add my own special touch. I want to be different from others and bring the best to the table. Link to one of his most watched videos https://youtu.be/ZWX1qohNgwU
- How do you manage to also stay consistent?
About consistency, it’s not easy but I have a strong support system. My family, friends and even my subscribers are all part of it. I get motivated to stay consistent when someone sends me a message requesting I do a part 2 of a video or asking why I haven’t posted in a long while. All these positive feedbacks keep me going.
- As a content creator, do you think making mistakes is important?
Yes, you learn and grow from your mistakes. I made a mistake once and it was all over the internet. It affected me and I had to withdraw myself and take a break. I later had to apologize and move past it. It was a mistake, I learned from it and I know I won’t repeat that mistake again. I’m a stronger person now because of that.
- What advise will you give to someone who wants to start YouTube.
YouTube is a very tough job, it requires time and consistency. You have to be willing to sacrifice your time and effort. The starting may be very hard but if you are consistent and people appreciate what you do, you will see the reward.
Saul – A lot of people do not realize that YouTube is a full time job and if you do it well, it pays. This goes for everything in life, if you are consistent and do what you do well, you will reap the benefits.
